Gender Diversity and Equality Workshop
Friday November 6th 2020, 09:15 – 12:00
Hosted virtually on Zoom, by the GEODES Committee – GEOscience Diversity & Equality Switzerland
With support from the SCNAT, ETHZ & Swiss Geological Society
To raise awareness of the benefits that gender diversity, equality and inclusion bring for scientific advancement and research culture. This workshop will address the challenges, the statistics and the initiatives aimed at improving gender equality in the Swiss (Geo)science community.
Who is the Workshop for?
Geoscientists of all genders, backgrounds and levels are welcome and encouraged to attend. Only with inclusion and understanding from everyone can we guide our community to true diversity and better science.

What is the GEODES committee?
*The GEODES – GEOscience Diversity and Equality Switzerland Committee was created in September 2020 to support and promote specific actions to foster diversity, equality, and inclusion in Swiss Geosciences.
The Story of the GEODES Committee
Last year concern was raised that the Swiss Geoscience Meeting lacked a gender balance in the plenary talks and session conveners. This sparked a discussion between geoscientists from different parts of Switzerland and the WINGS (Women in Geoscience) initiative began. The WINGS group organised an open discussion on gender diversity during the lunch break of SGM 2019 and offered purple ribbons to SGM participants to show their support for gender equality. Many important ideas and actions to improve diversity were raised last year, and a goal was set to run a more formal workshop and discussion on gender diversity at the SGM Zurich 2020.
During the organisation of the SGM 2020 workshop it became clear that a Swiss-wide initiative was required to provide a voice for gender equality, but also racial equality and issues of inequality faced by other minorities. It was also clear that diversity working groups already exist in most fields of geoscience, as well as many passionate and interested individuals around Switzerland, but that a connecting thread between them was needed. From the basis of WINGS, a Swiss-wide committee was established with a broader scope and Swiss-wide coordination, called GEODES.
